The Wolftrap
By BOEKENHOUTSKLOOF
2018 South Africa
Red
Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776. Located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, the farm’s name means “ravine of the Boekenhout” (pronounced Book-n-Howed). In 1993 the farm and homestead was bought and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established that now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier
For this 2018 blend, the winery opted for a higher percentage of Syrah. The Syrah adds robust, brambly flavors with its fine aromas of violets and ripe plums. Mourvèdre from the Swartland again lended a touch of austerity, a red fruit character, and smoky body with the dash of Viognier contributing perfume and vibrancy. This classic, rustic Rhone style blend again over delivers at its attractive price point. |

Dr. Hermann
2017 Mosel
URZIGER WURZGARTEN
Riesling
94 Wine Advocate
This is as good a Kabinett as you will ever find for under $20!
From Wine Advocate: The 2017 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett is from old vines on the upper part of the cru, where the plants root in volcanic sandstone soils and benefit from a slower ripening. It offers generously aromatic tropical fruit that reminds me a bit of the Erdener Prälat in its warm and concentrated fruit flavor. Very elegant, lush and piquant, with fascinating vibrancy and lingering salinity, this is a gorgeous and complex Kabinett with 8% alcohol and 50.6 grams per liter of residual sugar. Lush and gorgeous!

Trinitas
2016 Mendocino
OLD VINE
Zinfandel
The emergence of Anderson Valley as a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay powerhouse has dulled some of Mendocino’s original luster as a source of Zinfandel, but this vast county still has a lot of Zin in the ground. Most of it is within the region’s interior.Great Zinfandel producers such as Terra D' Oro, Montevina, Sobon and many others make great Zinfandel from Mendocino. Add Trinitas cellars to the list with this very tasty bottling!
Dark berry fruit, baking spice, white peper and hints of cocoa powder on the rich, lingering finish. ~Mark's Top Pick~

Rita's Earth
By Babcock Winery
2018 Sta. Rita Hills
Pinot Noir
This wine is an homage to the strength and beauty of Saint Rita, the namesake of our appellation, the Sta. Rita Hills. The timeless rose on the label was drawn by the owners artistic daughter, Chloe. It represents the final, miraculous rose that was taken to Rita after being plucked out of her garden in the middle of winter, shortly before her passing.
The Sta. Rita Hills earth is front-stage-center and is enveloped by spicy cherries. On the palate, it has a substantial fruit weight and fine tannins. Yes, this Rita’s Earth Pinot should age well. While it’s a pleasure to drink now, but it should continue to spread its wings over the next few years. |

Marietta
2016 California
ESTATE GROWN
ARME
Cabernet Sauvignon
93 Antonio Galloni
Marietta’s husband, Armé, lived, worked and fished throughout Alexander Valley, the Yorkville Highlands and the McDowell Valley. From our vineyards in those same valleys, we combine the best of what these sites offer to create a unique Cabernet Sauvignon. This approachable but incredibly serious wine is representative of excellent site selection possible only through covering miles of ground and constant thought and exploration.
From Antonio Galloni: The 2016 Arme is another superb wine in the middle tier of the Marietta range. Fresh, savory and super-expressive, the Armé has a lot going on. Black cherry, sage, lavender, menthol and licorice give the wine striking savory nuance to play off the dark Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. More than anything else, though, the Armé is a superb value in California Cabernet.

2016 Santa Barbara County
CORK DANCER
Pinot Noir
Hitching Post Wines are made by Frank Ostini, chef/owner of the Hitching Post II, and Gray Hartley, a former commercial fisherman. Starting in 1979 with one barrel in their garage, from humble beginnings to high tech, they continue to make traditional wines of balance and finesse that emphasize deep fruit, spice, and earthiness.
Solid as ever! Typical soft, ripe fruit with the signature cola and cherry notes. A blend of Santa Maria Valley and Sta. Rita Hills vineyards, the Cork Dancer displays a rich, dark fruit profile with balanced structure and body. |

Domaine Laroque
2017 Carcassonne
Cabernet Franc
One of the best Cabernet Franc's from France we have ever offered for under $10. Loads of flavor and spice, hard to believe it's this price!
Laroque which means "the rock," is produced from vineyards located in the hills of the famous ancient fortified city of Carcassonne in Southern France. The vineyards which produce Laroque have been making wine since the 6th century; its name comes from the Stone Age menhirs found throughout the region. Larogue is an easy-to-drink wine that combines the structure, minerality and dusty rose characteristics of Cabernet Franc with the lively, fruitiness of wines from the south of France. |

Chateau Lalande Borie
2016 St. Julien
Bordeaux
93 Wine Spectator
92 Jeb Dunnuck
92 Neal Martin
The critics overwhelmingly agree that this is one terrific Bordeaux! This is one classy wine that can be enjoyed now but will certainly benefit with some time in the bottle.
From Wine Spectator: Vivid and racy cassis, blueberry puree and damson plum coulis flavors show serious cut and drive, while mouthwatering bramble and sweet tobacco notes fill in. Best from 2023 through 2036.
From Jeb Dunnuck: Another winner from the genius of Bruno Borie, the 2016 Lalande-Borie is a wine savvy readers should seek out. My money is on it being the best to date, and it also shows how successful Saint-Julien was in 2016. Offering loads of pure cassis, violets, and sappy herb aromas and flavors, this beauty is all elegance and purity on the palate, with fine tannins, medium to full-bodied richness, impressive depth of fruit, and a great finish.

Bonny Doon
2018 Monterey
LE CIGARE VOLANT
CUVEE OUMUAMUA
Red Blend
One of our favorite Le Cigare Volant red blends in many years.
Lets let the inimitable owner of Bonny Doon, Randall Graham describe this years version.
From Randall Graham: . My colleague, Nicole Walsh, and I toil away at the Cigare blend every year, and while the blend changes (sometimes radically, as it has this year), we share an idea of the Platonic form of Cigare, and the ‘18 still certainly embodies that form. It goes something like this: juiciness, fruit (but not confected or overripe), brightness, exuberance, joy, and not least, a sense of savoriness. I realize I’m not speaking orthodox wine parlance. We look above all for balance and liveliness, for vinous qi. This wine is still incredibly young and just wants to jump out of its shoes.
52% Grenache, 35% Cinsault, 13% Syrah

Muga
2014 Rioja
SELECCION ESPECIAL
Reserva
93 Wine Advocate
93 Jeb Dunnuck
93 Vinous
A compelling Rioja that is recognized as truly great from some of the most notable wine critics on the planet!
From Jeb Dunnuck: the 2014 Muga Reserva Selección Especial checks in as a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, 10% Graciano, 5% Manuelo. With an inky black color and loads of black fruits, charcoal, lead pencil, and espresso aromas and flavors, it's medium to full-bodied, has slightly more acidity than the 2012, as well as more tannin. It's a balanced, pure, beautiful expression of Rioja.
From Vinous: Juicy and pliant in the mouth, offering gently sweet black raspberry, cherry-cola, spicecake and rose pastille flavors that deepen steadily on the back half. In an energetic style, showing excellent clarity and silky tannins that frame an impressively long, focused finish.
