Chateau de Fonbel 2022 Grand Cru Bordeaux

2022 Chateau de Fonbel is a brilliant reminder that great Saint-Emilion doesn’t have to carry a triple-digit price tag. Owned by the Vauthier family of Chateau Ausone, this estate captures the same meticulous winemaking philosophy at only a fraction of the cost.

The blend this vintage, 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and 5% Carménère shows remarkable depth and freshness, a signature of the excellent 2022 Bordeaux vintage. Ripe plum, blackberry, and mocha flow seamlessly into notes of violets and subtle oak spice, guided by supple tannins and a long, polished finish.

Critics have praised its balance and structure, calling it a “mini-Ausone” in quality and refinement.

From Jeb Dunnuck (94pts): The 2022 Château De Fonbel is more rounded and layered, with beautiful cassis and black cherry fruits intermixed with chocolaty herbs, graphite, and crushed stone. This ripe, textured, medium to full-bodied 2022 has beautiful tannins and outstanding length. I like it today, and it should have 10-12 years, if not slightly longer, of prime drinking.
