The Incredible 93 Point 2023 Descendientes de J. Palacios Pétalos del Bierzo!
Every few years a wine reminds you why you fell in love with Spain in the first place, and the 2023 Pétalos by Descendientes J. Palacios is exactly that kind of bottle. It is a beautifully perfumed, medium-bodied red from Bierzo that drinks like a far more expensive wine yet remains one of the country’s smartest buys.
From the heart of Bierzo in northwestern Spain, this Mencía-based red is renowned for offering Burgundy-like elegance and complexity without the Burgundy price. Crafted primarily from old-vine Mencía, the wine is defined by its velvety texture, excellent freshness, and intense, complex flavors that offer a long, beautiful finish. It’s a medium-bodied red that is both rich and easy to drink.
From the Wine Advocate (93pts): It has a serious nose that combines berry fruit with herbs and a licorice twist, and it is a little tighter and more herbal, denoting more sensation of freshness in the wine even if the year was also warmish. But the peaks of heat did not reach the highs they did in 2022. It makes you think of the Bierzo wines from yesteryear, with the rain during the harvest. It's elegant but there's weight. Despite the price level, this is a wine that aged beautifully in bottle, something you don't expect in an entry-level wine. This keeps its position as one of the best values in Spain.
